Community Health Nurse In Charge (NIC)

The Community Health Nurse in Charge is responsible for identifying, assessing, planning, delivering, evaluating, and documenting nursing interventions that address the health issues and health needs of the residents of the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. To collaborate with the community, families, individuals, other professionals, organizations, and governments, to meet those needs. The goal of the NIC is to promote and preserve the health of the community through a focus on health promotion, health maintenance, and health education. The NIC supervises health prevention and promotion programs directly accosiated with the Community Health Nursing program.

The Southern Ontario Zone Nursing Officer, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, shall provide functional support as required and as related to nursing practice. The NIC works under the management and support of the Health Services Coordinator, the Chief Administrative Officer, and overall authority from the Tyendinaga Mohawk Council.

Essential Qualifications:
  • A baccalaureate degree in Nursing from a University or diploma in nursing with a certificate or diploma in Community Health Nursing from a University or First Nation and Inuit Health Branch recognized equivalent
  • Valid and current registration with and member in good standing of the College of Nurses in Ontario at time of hiring
  • Valid and current immunization certification
  • a minimum of five years experience as a Community Health Nurse with at least one year in an acute nursing setting
  • Nursing and/or health care professional supervision experience an asset
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • excellent organizational, time management, analytical, discretionary and thinking skills
  • excellent computer based skills
  • high degree of initiative, insight, and self-direction
  • excellent lateral thinking ability to prepare for the unexpected outcomes
  • excellent written, concise documentation skills
  • keen sinsitivity to First Nation and community health issues
  • Excellent "respond to demand: techniques
  • high level of willingness and ability to work in a rigorous, diverse and often demanding work environment
  • total compliance of Confidentiality
  • high degree of stress management skills
Demonstrated Competencies/Knowledge:
  • First Nations health issues and programming
  • Proposal and report writing
  • Budget management
Other Position Requirements:
  • current basic rescuer CPR, First Aid and WHMIS certification
  • Valid drivers license, insurance and own dependable transportation
  • Clear Criminal Reference Check
  • Able to work flex hours as required for program delivery
  • must be able to travel for meetings, workshops, and upgrading skills
  • Preference will be given to Native applicants
Duties & Responsibilities: Work Procedures
  • Provides health education in conjunction with other service providers either individually or group
  • Performs health assessments and provides nursing interventions for clients in a clinic setting or at home
  • Maintains individual client health files/documentation according to the established standards of the College of Nurses and MBQ guidelines
  • maintains current nursing knowledge and skills with new and changing trends
  • provide direct supervision of health services programming and will provide a holistic health team involvement with the community and client being the focal point
  • provide day-to-day supervision to programming and associated administrative duties
  • establish and maintain effective communications and good public relations
  • maintains the organization of a functional, efficient work area
  • other duties as may reasonably be required as an NIC
