NEWS FROM OPLAN
Submitted by Jim Barlow, OPLAN Steering Committee
The Ontario Prior Learning Assessment Network (OPLAN) has had two very successful meetings this year to date. Our format is simple: an open Steering Committee meeting followed by a professional development event. The objectives of the PD sessions are:
- to provide an opportunity for interested individuals interested to learn about and discuss topics related to PLAR;
- informal networking opportunity for all constituent groups;
- a forum for analysis of issues related to PLAR and their implications for further action (advocacy, research); and
- an invitation to share resources.
Premika Ralnam, film maker and researcher, presented at the fall meeting. Her Gold Medal, internationally awarded film, "Access Denied", profiled the lives of foreign-trained professionals as they tried to become accredited in Canada. An intense discussion followed. All those in attendance could identify very closely with the people in this film because we have seen them in our PLA client group.
The winter meeting program included an update on the plans for the 2nd National Forum on PLA & Recognition, PLA projects and demonstrations from three software companies: Live and Learn, (presented by Selia Karsten from Seneca College); Learning Planner (presented by Doug Brown from QA Consulting) and Portfolio Builder (Presented by JMJ Company). There was an opportunity for those present to contribute to further development and application through critique and use of the products.
We now have a paid membership of 48 people. Approximately 35 people attend the meetings. We openly invite PLAR practitioners and supporters to join us. Only with a broad-based membership will we have voice to lobby and support on behalf of PLAR and the adult learner. Eleanor Conlin (Econlin@conestogac.on.ca) will be pleased to send you a membership form. Watch the PLA list serve for our notice regarding the spring meeting. OPLAN members will be looking forward to meeting everyone at the 10th PLA Conference in Belleville.
