HISTORY
After starting
in temporary quarters in May 1990, the library opened in its present location
in May 1991.
The library is supported by a per capita grant from the Ministry of Culture, and by the fundraising efforts of the Board.
Board meetings are the first Tuesday of the month, if you have an item
for consideration on the agenda it should be submitted 24 hours before
the board meeting.
Ka:nhiote Mission Statement: To be a Cultural and Educational Resource
Centre.
Each library is unique and reflects the needs and desires of the community.
A First Nation library has a dual function - not just a place to find
current information, also a place to save history and language - our Mohawk
history and language.
It is a goal of our library to meet the informational needs of Tyendinaga.
It is a goal of our library to be an information center on all aspects
of our cultural heritage, language and traditions; to foster knowledge
and understanding of Native Culture, beliefs and the issues of today.
While working to build a balanced collection featuring self-teaching material,
recreation, family life, healthy lifestyle environment and fiction, our
focus is Aboriginal culture with emphasis on Iroquois.
Among the many donations the library has received are gifts of time, money,
old books, new books, furniture, building material, computer equipment
and artifacts. To all persons, community members, organizations and businesses
who donated to the library - NIA:WEN KIWAHI - we appreciate your help
and generosity.
